I recently had the chance to conduct an interview with Mykie Fisher, a phenomenal actor who stars in one of my favorite new web series—The Rules of Messin’ Around. According to his bio, Mykie always had a love for TV and Movies. As a kid, he would watch shows like Different Strokes and The Cosby Show and after the show was over, he would grab his younger brother and cousins, find a tape recorder, and act out some of the scenes from these shows. Mykie did plays on up into High School until another part of his life took over…the streets.
In 2010, Mykie decided to get his life back in check, thought back to the things that made him happy as a kid, and one of those things that popped up was acting. He signed with an agent in Nashville and began going out on auditions for Film and Television roles. Since then, he has booked roles in feature films, numerous commercials, industrials, and music videos. Wow! Mykie is definitely a true image of perseverance and redemption!
Check out my interview with Mykie where he discusses The Rules of Messin’ Around, his dream role, what’s next for him, and more below.
-Growing up, did you always know that you wanted to get into acting?
Yes! I figured it out in Fourth grade. My teacher Mrs. Ashworth gave myself and another student a skit to read. I’ll never forget her reaction to the feeling I brought to the words on that paper. After that is when I started going out for school and church plays then came the movie Juice and Tupac’s performance of Bishop that really took it over the top for me. I was 15 then and I knew for sure that I was going to be an actor someday. But, life got in the way and it would be 15 more years until I actually pursued it on a professional level. But I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere!
-You’ve done some films, TV series, and web series. What has been your favorite project to work on and why?
This might sound corny, but every single one of them! I love being on set! I love creating and I love acting!
-You play the lead male character in The Rules of Messin Around. Why did you decide to audition for the show?
Yes! Actually Willie(Robbins) was looking for a lead character and offered it to me. I was actually doing a couple of other shows at the time, and didn’t really know Will personally. But I knew his work and I knew he was very talented. So when he hit me up I was like…I’m in!
-Are there any similarities between you and Lawrence?
I think everyone has been Lawrence at some point in their life. Struggling with love, struggling with faith, struggling with friends…and all of those areas are so tricky and sensitive and can be full of real life drama. That’s why I think people are feeling the show so much. They can relate.
-Season one just ended and you just got the scripts for season two of The Rules of Messin’ Around. What can fans/viewers expect in season two?
Drama, drama, and more drama… Willie has outdone himself with season 2. He’s also added new characters that are either adding to the drama, or bringing their own…it’s gooood!!
-If you had the chance to work with any actor or actress for a film or show, who would it be? Why?
I think Morgan Freeman. That guy just looks like wisdom(lol)… ou know what I mean? He looks like he could school you on acting as well as just everyday life.
-What would be your dream role?
TUPAC SHAKUR. Period.
-You were also part of the web series Johnny Dynamo and Mr. Frost. How was that experience?
Yes! Two great shows! I got to work with Tiny Lister(Deebo from the Friday movies and so much more) and Terry Kiser(Bernie from Weekend at Bernie‘s and so much more). Those guys are legends and have made some classic films and television shows. That was one of the times I actually stopped and realized my dream was coming true…acting face to face with guys that I grew up watching while wanting to be an actor is a crazy good feeling.
-What advice would you give to someone who wants to get into acting?
Go for it! Don’t wait! Get into class. Not only do you learn the craft in class, and learn the ins and outs of the business, but you meet people who are just like you, which is a big help. Believe in yourself and surround yourself with people who believe in you…you’re going to need all of the support you can get. Read, read, read…read everything you can about acting.
-What is NEXT for Mykie Fisher?
Of course TROMA season 2! I also have a few films coming out soon—HR, WAY OF THE LADDER, SOUL and THE CAPTIVES. I’ve also worked with Willie again on a couple of short films called QUESTIONS and one called CIRCUMVENT, and he just wrote a feature called ABOUND that we’ll probably start working on early 2016. Other than that (I’m) just trying to take it to the next level. I think the key to success is hard work and consistency…so that’s what I’m trying to do!
