LOS ANGELES – The team behind the innovative webseries BLACK GIRL IN A BIG DRESS announced that the show has been nominated for Best Social Video in the 22nd Annual Webby Awards. Hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by The New York Times, The Webby Awards, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), is the leading international awards organization honoring excellence on the Internet.
BLACK GIRL IN A BIG DRESS is an 8-episode webseries about awkward an African American Anglophile cosplayer who tries to navigate 21st century dating with 19th century ideals. It launched in the fall of 2017 and currently has more than 2 million views across all platforms.
Writer and Creator Aydrea Walden said she was it was childhood inspiration that led her to create this innovative show.
“I always loved fairy tales,” said Walden, “I loved the fantasy, the grandeur, the dresses. I really loved the dresses. But no one who looked like me was ever the main character of one of those stories.”
Eventually, said Walden, she realized she could buy her own giant dresses and start making fairy tales of her own.
Though there is a sizeable and vibrant community of African American cosplayers, they get relatively little attention in media. And the attention they do get tends to focus on the players responding to controversy and challenge, rather than celebrating their hobby. Efforts like last year’s #29daysofblackcosplay have worked to raise the profile of black cosplayers, but there’s still a long way to go.
“There’s still an assumption that ‘black’ stories must be very serious or very dramatic, or about struggle,” said Walden. “But black people also have fun and play around and love romantic comedies and do all the goofy things that white people do. BLACK GIRL IN A BIG DRESS has fun with one of those goofy things.”
As a nominee, Black Girl in a Big Dress is also eligible to win a Webby People’s Voice Award, which is voted online by fans across the globe. From now until April 20th, Black Girl in a Big Dress fans can cast their votes at vote.webbyawards.com. (Category: Social->Video->Arts and Entertainment).
