Originally invented in the U.K., MTV’s Ex on the Beach is finally making its way to the U.S. tonight, April 19th. For those who don’t know, Ex on the Beach puts 11 singles, some of whom are reality TV stars from shows like Vanderpump Rules and Big Brother, together on an island and while they originally thought they were possibly going to find love, things change when their exes pop up. Recently, Black Talent TV had the pleasure of interviewing one of the show’s stars—Cory Wharton.
Cory appeared on MTV’s The Real World in 2014 and has been gracing TV screens ever since. He’s been on countless seasons of The Challenge, a competition show featuring various cast members from The Real World, Road Rules, Are You The One?, and more, vying for an enormous amount of money. While he has not won a season yet, Cory has made the finals twice and came in second on his first Challenge season, Battle of the Bloodlines. Besides being on TV, Cory is a fitness coach, model, and father to a beautiful daughter, Ryder.
Check out our interview with Cory Wharton where he talks about what to expect from Ex on the Beach, which season of The Challenge was his favorite, what’s next from him, and more below.
1-Growing up, did you ever see yourself being on TV in some capacity?
As funny as it sounds, I always saw myself being on TV. When I was younger, my grandma would film me 24/7 and I feel like that made me really comfortable around the camera.
2-Your season of The Real World: Ex-Plosion premieres in 2014. Looking back, is there anything that you would do different?
Yeah, my season of The Real World is about five years old now and honestly there’s nothing that I would do to change it up. I’m happier where I am and I feel like if you change something in the past, it can change the future so I’m happy where I am.
3-What’s your favorite moment from The Real World: Ex-Plosion?
I would say my favorite moment from The Real World would be the family vacation we took before the exes came.
4-Since The Real World: Ex-Plosion, you’ve been on many challenges. Which of your Challenge seasons was your favorite?
I would have to say that my favorite season would be The Challenge: Invasion because I got to live outside in Thailand for two weeks and that’s something you would never normally get to do. I think that’s a really cool experience and I made it to the final so that helps.
5-Do you plan on doing more challenges in the near future?
I definitely plan on doing more challenges in the future. I don’t know how many or for how long but I definitely see myself going back on the show.
6-If you had a chance to pick your own 10-member team for The Challenge, who would you pick?
I would pick Nelson, Hunter, me, CT and Darrell. For the girls, Cara(Maria), Laurel, Emily, Nicole, and Jenna.
7-After being on The Real World and The Challenge, what made you sign on to do another show?
I wanted to do another show that wasn’t The Challenge. I wanted to do a dating show for the first time just to see what it was like so that’s why I signed up to do Ex on the Beach and let’s be honest, I’ve had really bad luck in relationship so hopefully the show changes that.
8-What can fans expect from Ex on the Beach?
I think the fans are going to love the show. It’s going to be hilarious, dramatic, emotional, and even more hilarious.
9-What advice would you give to someone who is about to go on reality TV?
I would just tell that person to be themselves because at the end of the day, that’s all that you have. Make sure that you’re yourself and don’t worry about what everyone else is going to say because you can’t please everybody.
10-What is NEXT for Cory Wharton?
What’s next for me…well, I have some shows coming out later this year. I also have some apparel coming out. Right now, my main goal is just being the best dad that I can be so that’s really where my focus is—just raising my daughter and keeping this train going.
