Recently, Black Talent TV had the pleasure of interviewing a phenomenal actor who’s appeared on everything from films and TV series to stage plays and this talented individual is Christian Keyes. Born in Detroit, MI but raised in Flint, Keyes is also a singer, author, and producer who’s impressive resume that includes Bounce’s Saints & Sinners, CW’s Supernatural, and Dysfunctional Friends with Stacey Dash, Meagan Good, Stacy Kiebler, and Wesley Jonathan. One of his most recent projects is BET’s In Contempt where he plays attorney Charlie Riggs.
Check out our interview with Christian Keyes where he discusses how he became part of In Contempt, what his dream role is, and much more below.
1-Growing up, what moment made you realize that you wanted to pursue an acting career?
I actually thought that music was going to be my path. God had other plans. I started acting locally in Michigan, taking classes, doing commercials, and stage plays. I auditioned for my first national stage play and booked it.
2-You were part of the star studded film Dysfunctional Friends. What was it like being part of a film with so many great actors & actresses?
It was great working with all the incredible young talent on that film. Every time I looked around, somebody was killing it in a scene. I got a lot of inspiration from watching them and from acting in scenes with them because, at the time, most of the cast had substantially larger resumes than mine. But working with them also let me know that I belong there and that I was amongst peers. It was confirmation that I was right where I needed to be.
3-Out of all your films, which was your favorite to shoot?
Note to Self was definitely one of my favorites to shoot, because I wrote it and got to be the lead in it. It was received really well and it let me know that writing wise, I was in a good place and that I can really do this and continue to create content.
4-You’ve been part of many great TV series. Which was your favorite to shoot?
So far, In Contempt and Supernatural have been the most fun. But I have enjoyed each role on every show. I try to always treat each role like its Avatar, the biggest project in the world. I don’t feel like there are many small roles. With In Contempt, playing an attorney has been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, so I jumped at the opportunity. It’s a very well written show and it’s very honest. With Supernatural, the opportunity to play an archangel, with wings and powers, was too amazing to resist.
5-How did you become part of In Contempt?
This came about through the usual process of auditioning. I believe I end up going in a few times, and each time they would give me adjustments and I would make them. But I did feel like the role was a perfect fit. I believed that I could do this role justice. Thankfully, the casting director, network, and Production Company gave me a chance to.
6-What is your dream role?
Dream role…I definitely want to play a superhero soon. I also want to play a psychopath. I want to continue to push the envelope and play characters that aren’t the typical role that people would associate me with.
7-Do you plan on dabbling more into writing, producing, and singing in the future?
Absolutely! I am finishing my third novel, which should be available everywhere at the beginning of the year, 2019. And I am in the process of getting some new music done as well. Hopefully, I will be able to sneak some of my music into the shows that I am doing.
8-What advice would you give to someone who wants to be an actor?
I would say to stay in class, stay learning…work on your craft daily. That way you will be ready for whatever opportunity presents itself, and you will be sharp and you will be comfortable and confident.
9-What is NEXT for Christian Keyes?
Actually, I’m headed to Toronto to start filming a new show for Amazon Prime called The Boys. This is their first season and I will be recurring in four of the episodes. I’m definitely looking forward to being a part of the Amazon family and part of this great production.
